This beautiful waterfall is inside the Chinnar Sanctuary. Its enchanting surroundings make this an excellent picnic spot and trekking point. It is reachable by a jeep or a trek through the forest. One can even get a chance to sight a few animals during the waterfall trek. The trek starts from the Alampatty forest check post. From here, it takes about an hour to reach the waterfall. Waterfall trek tickets can be purchased at the check post. A guide is a must for this trek. The water flow that creates the cascade is River Pambar.
it shares boundary with Indira Gandhi wild life sanctuary in Tamilnadu. Established in 1984, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the protected areas in the whole of Western Ghats due to its ecological, floral, geomorphologic and cultural significance. It is located in the eastern part of high ranges of southern Western Ghats of Kerala at Devikulam taluk of Idukki district. Covering an area of 90sq. km, the sanctuary is home to a large number of mammals, reptiles and avifauna. The sanctuary is the second habitat of the giant grizzled squirrel, a Western Ghats endemic.
Situated near Kanthalloor, it is the largest shola forest in Kerala. The Evergreen Rain forest is the haven of many rare and common species of animals, birds and plants. This 14 km² of unique ecosystem was notified as a reserved forest through an order of the Government of the erstwhile Travancore State on October 22, 1901.
The famous Pambar River originates in the Anaimudi Hills and flows between Kanthalloor and Marayoor Villages. It becomes the Amaravathi River in Tamil Nadu, reaches the Amaravathi Reservoir and eventually joins the Kaveri River near Karur.
It is a picturesque place situated 14 kms away from Kanthaloor through the forest route of Mannavan shola. Here boating facilities are available. This route can also be taken to Munnar which is 20 kms away. Access through Mannavan Shola forest route is restricted to tourists at the moment.
Rebuild of Pattisseri Dam is in full swing and it is likely to be completed in 2021. Expansion of this Dam is being carried out to meet the ever increasing water demand for irrigation and drinking purposes. When completed, we are likely to see boating and a Garden/Park as part of this project.
Sugarcane farms are known for a tasty variety of solid molasses. In Marayoor and Kanthalloor, you can see beautiful sugar cane farms and the sugar cane extracting units. Undoubtedly, a ride to this spot will not be in vain.
A perennial and multicut aromatic grass commonly known as ‘East Indian Lemon grass’ is grown widely in Marayoor and Kanthalloor. It has anti-fungal property and is a good cleaning agent. It also has anti- cancerous properties. Tourists can enjoy the enchanting aroma of lemon grass oil and can purchase it at a reasonable rate.
Marayoor is the only place in Kerala that has natural growth of sandalwood trees. The Sandalwood factory run by the Forest Department is of tourist interest. Sandalwood oil is extracted from the root and wood of sandalwood trees. Sandalwood otherwise called “liquid gold” is a popular perfume, among the elite. Experience the unique ambience of a forest, fully scented with the natural sandalwood.
Muniyaras are caves with murals and relics from the New Stone Age civilization. Marayoor is famous for dolmens (muniyara) and ancient rock paintings, making this place an archaeologists delight.
Lakkom Water Falls, also known as Lakkam Waterfalls, is a tourist attraction located near Marayoor in the Idukki district of Kerala. These falls are part of the Eravikulam stream, which is a part of Eravikulam National Park. This is one of the major tributaries of Pambar River and is ideal for swimming in privacy.
The crocodile farm is located close to the Amaravathi dam, around 25 kms from Udumalpet and 35 kms from Marayoor. The farm has a huge collection of crocodiles.
Situated at a height of 5000 ft above sea level, it provides the cool climate for natural farming of seasonal fruits like Apple, Peach, Pear, Orange, Strawberry, Blackberry, Plum, Pomegranate, Custard Apple, Gooseberry, Avocado, Fig, Guava, Lemon, Lime, Kiwi, Passion fruit etc. Vegetables like Cauliflower, Cabbage, Carrot, Beetroot, Potato, Capsicum, Beans, Butter beans, Green peas etc are also abundantly grown. The climate is also ideal for commercial cultivation of exotic flowers. Here the cultivation is done with minimum use of chemical fertilizers.
There are few great gardens where you could see and buy fruits. Remember that every time is not the season time.
